I have sets of VHS tapes that needed to be converted as VHS decks disappear. This one does all that I need even though it takes some time.
I'm using XP SP3 with the 900 updates on an Intel core duo.Your VHS deck needs either the red-white-yellow outputs or S-Video out on the back to plug in the cable. Then just plug in the USB cable into your computer. You only need the honestech (HOnest Technology) software even though it comes with a video grabber program also. Start the honestech, start playing the VHS, and on the Capture menu, click the Record button. In options you can select normal, good, & best for capture quality. It will start to convert the tape into an mp3 file at real-time speed, so you either watch it or set the timer to shut off if you know the length of the recording, and do something else.Once it's finished, you can go into EDIT and add chapters or remove clips. You then go to RECORD where you can edit your opening menu page and start your recording.
The actual burning is faster than the vhs to mp3 conversion. You probably could just keep it in mp3 format and play with it in another video editor. It's easy and I can now play the old tapes on a DVD machine. That's all I wanted and that's what I got with this package. It will also convert to other video formats but I haven't tried those.

I'm confused by the reviewers who say this will not work in W7.I have installed the software on two W7 PC's, one is a laptop and one is a desktop, both are W7 64 bit.The DRIVERS are listed as CHINA with a date of, so they have been around for a while and they work fine.I purchased this to enable me to set up security cameras using my PC's. For this function it works great. There is one problem I have noted. When recording video with a camera directly connected, the video is not viewable while I was recording.
The display shows a picture that appears to have lost HORIZONTAL SYNC. I tried all the different available modes but they all worked the same. However, even thought the recording was not viewable while active, when I stopped recording and watched the resulting video it was fine. This makes it very difficult to record something when you cannot see what is being recorded. I got this to use my PS2 with my laptop.

It was ready to go right out of the box after installing the drivers and EZ Grabber software. The EZ Grabber does indeed work with Windows 7 64-bit (2GB RAM Intel P6100 2.0GHz if that helps) with no lag, despite what some other reviewers are saying. The only reason why I haven't given this adapter the whole 5 stars is because for video capturing device, the image quality is somewhat grainy. It's fine for someone like me who just wanted something cheap so I could play my games the way I want but I can't imagine anyone using this device to take HQ pictures and videos. I've filled a folder on my laptop with TV shows i've gotten off my DVR. This thing is plug and play and works beautifully!! The software that comes with it is great and I use it for basic video editing. It sucks that it's only standard def but hey, you get what you pay for.
I've heard people have gotten better results using 'special RCA cables' with the fancy golden ends but who can be sure. But by far the best use for this thing (the reason i bought it) is video game recording. I run this into my laptop and run my laptop on my TV and have a flawless results. I bought this for converting family VHS tapes to digital format. For this purpose this is a great product. There's no loss in quality, probably because the tapes are not that great to begin with. Not sure what quality I would see from a conversion from a quality source such as a DVD, but I didn't buy it for that type of conversion.
For the purpose that I'm using this for I'm happy with the results I'm getting.I'm running this on Windows 7 64 Bit and haven't had any compatabilty issues. This wasn't too hard to set up. After installing the software I was able to plug this in to the VHS player, and my laptop, and was capturing video right away. For anyone looking to convert their old VHS tapes this isn't a bad product to go with. I tried the EZgrabber with two different computers, two different VCRs and with it's own software and also the Pinnacle Studio 11 capture feature with two different VCR tapes (that play fine when just playing) and I could not capture acceptable video with any combination of the above. When playing back the captured video, the sound track was fine, but the video would stutter and sometimes just freeze while the sound track kept going. When the video started back up, it was still in sync with the sound track, but it dropped so many frames, that it is just unacceptable. It is also very grainy, and I could not get the unit to capture anything except AVI. Even when I choose mp4, it still captured as AVI.
I don't know if it would have helped with the capture, but it would have been nice to have tried. Further, the unit would not capture with the S-video plugged in (or obviously with that setting enabled), which I think also would have helped with the quality. I had to use Composite. Both machines that I used have 4 GB of RAM, one with Win Vista 64 bit and one with Win 7 64 bit.I am very disappointed as I didn't want to spend an arm and a leg. I am working to convert videos for a Christmas present, and now it's too late to order a better unit, so I have to buy a VCR that converts VHS tapes to DVDs, which is a lot more expensive than this converter unit or a better one.Don't waste your time like I did; spend the money and get a better converter.UPDATE:After much wrangling and frustration, my husband suggested using his work PC with a faster processor to grab the video. It worked fine with his super-laptop.
Then I edited it on my laptop in Pinnacle Studio 11 Ultimate. My laptop is no slouch: Intel Core Duo P7350, 2GHz - 2GHz, 4 GB RAM, 64-bit, Win 7, but his is better.
Final conclusion: It will work great if you have power under the hood. In reviewing the one star reviews it is obvious that there is some sort of compatibilty issue with their computers. I took it out of the package, hooked it to my DVR output 2 and was recording in less than 10 minutes. I am running Windows 7 64 bit software and both the drivers supplied and the software worked without a hitch.
I then moved to the video/audio outputs on my 10 year old mitsubishi big screen tv. Still works fine although because of the analog nature of my TV you have to turn the sound way up in order to get a good volume while recording. The video that it records is definately not HD quality and is a little fuzzy but still fine considering the price. Only a few glitches in installing the software and drivers, but once installed, it has worked perfectly. There are problems with freeze up with the packaged VHS to DVD software, but you don't have to use it if you don't want to.I used Roxio to edit and burn the resulting DVD's, so it didn't bother me much that the Honestech VHS to DVD software did not seem to be able to edit and burn my DVD's. It did copy the VHS tapes into a folder and I had no problem working with those files.Nice product, overall. I just could not get this to work.
I tried using the 64 bit drivers on the manufacturer's website, running in several different compatibility modes, and even running the program as administrator. I used USB 2.0 as well as USB 3.0 ports. What I also noticed, is when this was plugged into my PC, it would disable any other devices sharing the same USB header on the motherboard. No idea why - this is the first time I've ever run across this.
Definitely some spotty construction if this happens. In the end, I just had to give up on it and pick up a more expensive device.
UPDATE: WORKS WITH WINDOWS 10!!!! AND OTHER WINDOWS AS WELL.
EASY CAP WAS A SHITTY DEVICE TO BEGIN WITH. IT NEVER SUPPORTED ANY DRIVERS IT CAME WITH AND THEN THE DRIVERS PEOPLE FOUND SOMETIMES NEVER WORKED.
AND AFTER A WHILE PEOPLE COULD NOT GET THERE DRIVERS TO WORK. SO LONG OVER DUE AND WAIT HERE ARE WORKING DRIVERS FOR ALL WINDOWS.
